Iosefin Water Tower: the 52 m twin tower on the Bega in Timișoara
The Iosefin Water Tower (Turnul de apă din Iosefin) is a 52 m industrial monument on the right bank of the Bega in the Iosefin district of Timișoara. Built just before the First World War as the twin of the Fabric tower, it is now being reborn as a cultural centre, which makes it a good stop for anyone interested in the city’s industrial heritage.
Timișoara has two identical water towers standing at opposite ends of the city’s water network, and the one in Iosefin once housed a phone exchange and homes for its keepers.
The history of the Iosefin Water Tower
At the start of the 20th century Timișoara needed a way to keep drinking water at an even pressure across the whole city. The answer was a pair of identical water towers placed at opposite ends of the distribution network, one in the Fabric district and one in Iosefin (Josefstadt), on the right bank of the Bega. The Iosefin tower was designed by the engineers János Lenarduzzi and Richárd Sabathiel and built by Lenarduzzi’s Budapest company. The sources place its construction between 1912 and 1914, and it stood ready as the twin of the Fabric tower.
The tower is 52 m high. Its upper level holds a tank of 500 cubic metres of drinking water, and a lower level has a 250 cubic metre tank for industrial water drawn from the Bega. Together with the Fabric tower it evened out the pressure at times of peak use, and the water stored in it could supply households for three or four hours if the pipes needed repair. Inside were homes for the employees and a phone exchange, used to communicate with the water plant. Operation ended in 1940.
Afterwards the tower stayed with the water company Aquatim until 2012, when the city hall took it over. By 2010 the lower part was covered with ivy and the listed monument was reported to be at risk of decay; in the following years it also served only as a support for mobile-phone antennas. In 2011 Aquatim held a round table with the city and heritage authorities, and architecture students presented ideas such as a science museum, a children’s play space, a reading room or a tea house. In 2012 a plan to sell the tower to private buyers caused public uproar, and local councillors struck it down.
In 2018 the city hall announced a small cultural café and a coffee museum dedicated to Francesco Illy, a businessman born in Timișoara who invented an espresso machine. In 2020 the tower was included in a larger project funded by EEA and Norway Grants, which aims to turn it into a permanent cultural centre with a café, an exhibition hall, a foyer and a belvedere. Rehabilitation works began in September 2021 and, according to English Wikipedia, were completed in July 2026. Because the new use is recent, it is wise to check what is open to visitors.
